A high-class Juvenile Hurdle prospect for 2016/17
3yo bay gelding by Manduro ex Perfect Note
A very well-bred individual who has shown promise on both starts on the flat, Boethius is a ready-made juvenile hurdle prospect for the season ahead.
A good fourth of 12 on his debut in a mile maiden on the flat last December, he finished behind and in front of winners that day, keeping on well up the straight to draw well clear of the remainder. Nothing went his way on his second start at Chelmsford, but he again showed ability and looks sure to improve for a stiffer test this year.
His pedigree makes for interesting reading. A second foal, his half-sister was a modest performer at two for Godolphin, eventually winning a nursery on her final start, but improved considerably for new connections at three, placing three times in Listed company over 8-10f. His dam won a maiden over a mile, and is a half-sister to a Group 3/Listed winner over 12-14f on the flat, out of a top-class middle distance filly who won the Group 1 Prix Vermeille.
By Manduro, who was the top-rated son of Monsun, sire of sires including Arcadio, Getaway and Shirocco, Boethius is bred to progress this term and has the physique to excel over hurdles. He had been in pre-training for the past six weeks with Godolphin and has schooled exceptionally well since joining us, with a view to starting off in a juvenile hurdle next month.
In the absence of the John Ferguson-trained juveniles (of which Boethius would have been one!), the juvenile hurdles this year are likely to be even weaker than is usually the case and I would like to think that on pedigree, form and model, Boethius could be one of the leading juvenile hurdlers this late summer/autumn, with a long-term target being the Fred Winter handicap hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival next March if he were to keep progressing.
